Lisbons's Old Town Alfama is a place to wander and to take photos. The name is actually derived from the Arab al-hamam the bath. Historic Castelo Sao Jorge is a former royal residence high above the city. Offering traditional Portuguese hospitality, this luxuriously appointed hotel overlooks an idyllic garden with heated swimming pool. It is only a short 5 minute walk from the shopping areas, and 15-20 minutes from historical quarters such as Castelo, Alfama, Chiado and Bairro Alto. A nostalgic tram, a public bus or other modern means of transportation take you 7 km west to the suburb of Belem, where the astounding Jeronimos Monastery with its fantastically eclectic architecture was erected by the river Tagus. A hint for the shopping enthusiasts: the most elegant boutiques are around Rossio Square. Mind the sizes, but style and quality are fantastic.
